Neighborhood Housing Services of Richland Center was established in Richland Center in 1983 as a private, non-profit,
community controlled corporation with a volunteer board and committees.
Funded initially by the City of Richland Center, NHS of Richland Center was
modeled after similar programs in 162 neighborhoods in 119 cities across the U.S. It was
developed through the assistance of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation,
a federally funded, non-profit, non-governmental agency. NHS of Richland County was a first;
established nationwide as a pilot rural city program; selected to utilize the
neighborhood idea on a city-wide basis. In early 1988, based on
organizational success and the needs of the rural community, NHS expanded its
housing programs to cover all of Richland
County and officially
changed its name to NHS of Richland County.
